MANILA SHAWL – “The Garden of Canton”
China (Canton), for export to the Philippines and Spain – ca. 1880–1920
✧ Artistic Description:
“The Garden of Canton” is a majestic large-format Manila shawl, crafted in black silk and hand-embroidered with floral and avian motifs inspired by traditional Chinese iconography. Likely made in Cantonese workshops for the export market, the intricate embroidery showcases vibrant flowers and birds in full flight, demonstrating the refined technique known as “needle painting.”
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Manila shawl holds deep cultural significance: it is a traditional garment worn in Andalusian flamenco dances and is also popular in Argentine tango as a graceful shawl. In decorative arts, it is commonly known as a “piano shawl,” draped elegantly over grand pianos in homes. In Spain, it is a symbol of timeless elegance and tradition, beloved by the Queen and admired throughout Spanish high society.
