Artistic Description and Technical Sheet: “The Yellow Garden of Lasem”
This extraordinary work, titled “The Yellow Garden of Lasem,” represents one of the most refined and delicate examples of East Javanese batik tulis, produced in the late 19th or early 20th century. The piece was made of very fine natural silk, with a soft and light texture, using the ancient batik tulis technique, applied entirely by hand with canting and natural dyes.
The warm yellow background—a solar and spiritual symbol—is decorated with a fabric of delicately defined floral and geometric motifs in shades of blue, green, violet, and black. These elements, arranged with perfect symmetry and visual cadence, evoke the refined style of batiks produced in Lasem or the neighboring town of Juana, both renowned for their technical quality, precise design, and sophisticated use of color.
The Lasem and Rembang regions were prestigious centers of batik production between the 19th and 20th centuries, with a strong Peranakan (Sino-Javanese) cultural presence, which significantly influenced the patterns and palettes used. These pieces were produced to order, generally for upper-class women or as part of a ceremonial trousseau.
The excellent state of preservation—without stains, structural wear, and still vibrant colors—adds extraordinary value to this piece. Its rarity, age, and technique make it a museum gem, ideal for display or heritage collection.
