Antique ceremonial shawl of fine natural dyed silk from Palembang, Sumatra, Indonesia, early 20th century (1930-1940).

Beautiful antique ceremonial shawl from Palembang, Sumatra, Indonesia, early 20th century (1900-1940). Stunning for its contrasting colors in a tribal art, this beautiful ceremonial shawl was made in fine silk entirely by hand using the natural dyeing and knotting technique in Singaraja.
It has a striking rectangular format of different colors in plum, grape violet, soft pistachio green and mandarin orange. The colors are marked by wide lines of strong stitching (tritik) which produces an irregular and dotted line. Small colored rhombuses, curves, three- and four-petalled florets, outlined in white, alternate with open squares in a loosely arranged diagonal grid. The motifs vary slightly across the sections; oblong orange motifs appear only in the purple sections, in a more geometric pattern.
By balancing the bold design format and background colors, the delicate pelangi technique creates bright, bold, irregular color and line definition, an impression of scattered flowers and bouquets emerging or floating on a violet and plum background. At each end, a large-scale wavy tritik line separates the plum and purple fields to dramatic effect.

The early introduction of aniline dyes into Bali enhanced its spectacular mastery of color and movement. The term Pelangi means “rainbow” or “multicolored” and denotes a type of fabric (usually silk) decorated with the wax tie-dye technique of the same name, whereby the pattern is built up by stitching together small pockets of fabric to resist the dye. Pelangi, especially in silk, is an ancient type of Balinese weaving for smaller pieces such as shoulder pads, sashes, upper body capes, and shrine covers. It is always brightly colored and used for rituals and ceremonial occasions. The Palembang region is famous for its batik, which is characterized by geometric patterns and floral motifs. Sumatran batik often uses natural dyes, although synthetic dyes have been incorporated over time.

The shawl is in perfect condition, with no loose threads, stains, or holes. The colors are bright and surprisingly vivid; the silk is quite light, with a soft crepe-like texture and a fluid drape.
