Artistic Description:
This refined silk piece, titled “The Golden Song of Rembang”, is a magnificent example of ceremonial textile art from Java’s northern coast in the early 20th century (ca.190-1930).. It is a Selendang Lokcan, or shoulder batik, entirely hand-drawn using the tulis technique on natural silk—a traditional practice strongly influenced by the Chi-nese-Peranakan culture of Java.
The design features a rich golden background adorned with stylized birds, symbolic floral elements, and curved lines that evoke wind and graceful motion. All motifs were meticulously applied with wax using a canting, preserving both delicacy and symbolic expression, representing longevity, elegance, and spiritual harmony.
Its state of preservation is impeccable: the silk is intact, free from stains or wear, and the wax lines remain crisp and clear. This piece was never used, making it an exceptionally rare example, ideal for heritage collec-tions or museum display.
Due to its visual elegance, technical mastery, and verified origin from a key batik production region, this work embodies a perfect synthesis of tradition, refinement, and living cultural legacy.
