EMBROIDERED GOLD THREAD FRAGMENT – “The Language of Sacred Gardens”
Muslim Asia (possibly Ottoman Empire, Northern India, or Sumatra) – ca. 1800–1890

Artistic Description:
This delicate textile piece, titled “The Language of Sacred Gardens”, is an antique fragment embroidered with metallic gold threads on a deep navy-blue silk background. It features a vertical composition of elongated vegetal motifs and stylized palmettes, enriched by tiny gold sequins that add a subtle ceremonial glow.
The fragment is backed with raw cotton, suggesting it may have once been part of a ceremonial robe, a palace curtain, a sacred altar hanging, or a ritual banner. The harmony between the radiant gold and the deep blue evokes the refined aesthetic of classical Islamic textile art, especially that of the Ottoman and Mughal traditions.

Historical Context:
Embroidered fragments of this nature were produced during the 18th and 19th centuries in courtly and religious contexts of great prestige, particularly in the Ottoman Empire, Mughal India, and Muslim Southeast Asia (notably Aceh and Sumatra). They were typically reserved for garments and furnishings associated with royalty, nobility, or religious ceremonial use.
This textile represents a rich cultural synthesis: the stylized vegetal patterns, metallic threads, and vertical symmetry are emblematic of ceremonial Muslim textiles. The concept of the “sacred garden” reflects the Islamic vision of paradise, where each textile served as a visual prayer and a symbol of divine beauty.

Dimensions: 51 x 40 cm
Weight: 94 g

Condition: Very good condition for its age – This is an antique piece, so there are some losses, but the embroidery is still intact, with very little visible damage and minimal loss around the edges. It is advisable to have the piece framed by a professional in antique textiles. The piece can also serve as a model or sample of ancient textile techniques in museums or antique shops.
Provenance: A private collection of the Astücke family and preserved in perfect condition within the family legacy, this fragment is part of a set of rare ceremonial textiles, carefully preserved and documented, stored in hardwood trunks for their optimal preservation.
