EMBROIDERED TEXTILE – “The Nobility of Twilight”
Muslim Asia (possibly Ottoman Empire, Northern India or Sumatra) – ca. 1880–1920

Artistic Description:
This exquisite textile fragment, titled “The Nobility of Twilight”, is hand-embroidered with metallic gold threads on a deep navy-blue silk background, almost black in tone. The design features a vertical composition of interwoven and symmetrical vegetal motifs, enhanced with delicate gold sequins hand-sewn across the surface, creating a luminous and rhythmic texture of great sophistication.
Although it follows the same aesthetic and technical pattern as its companion piece “The Legacy of the Realms”, this work is distinguished by its more elongated layout and sharply defined ornamental lines, evoking the architectural elegance of vegetal forms. The overall design reflects the refined decorative language typical of high-status Islamic textiles.
Historical Context:
This type of embroidery was commonly found in ceremonial and court textiles within Muslim traditions from the 19th to early 20th century, especially in the Ottoman Empire, Mughal India, and regions of Sumatra and Aceh. Such fragments were typically used in ritual garments, courtly caftans, palace banners, or sacred interior hangings. The intense dark blue background—symbol of protection and authority—combined with golden threads indicates a textile created for spiritual or noble ceremonial use.
Provenance: Private collection of the AStücke family, part of a collection of ceremonial textiles carefully preserved by the family since their arrival in Europe in the mid-20th century. This piece was found in one of the old family trunks and is in perfect condition, with no visible restorations.

Dimensions: 52 x 40 cm
Weight: 100 g

Condition: Excellent – no structural damage, firm embroidery, intense colors. Very good condition for its age. This is an antique fragment, so there are some losses, but the embroidery is still firm, with very little visible damage, and minimal loss around the edges. It is advisable to have the piece framed by a professional in antique textiles. The piece can also serve as a model or sample of antique textile techniques in museums or antique shops.
