This magnificent textile, titled “The Radiance of Toba”, is a majestic example of ceremonial weaving from the Batak people of North Sumatra, likely created between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a double Songket, woven in two sections and carefully sewn together to form a large, full-body ceremonial shawl.
The deep royal purple background is richly adorned with intricate geometric and symbolic motifs in gold and silver metallic threads, inserted during the weaving process using supplementary weft techniques. The dense texture, subtle shimmer, and precise design reflect outstanding craftsmanship, traditionally reserved for high-ranking events such as weddings, ancestral rites, or symbolic inheritance within Batak families.
This type of Songket, woven on traditional vertical looms, signifies prosperity, reverence for ancestors, and spiritual continuity. The joined format enhances its ceremonial role, designed to envelop the wearer with dignity and sacred meaning.
