Artistic description:
This exceptional piece, titled “The Secret Garden of Rembang”, is a refined example of traditional Javanese textile art known as Selendang Lokcan, crafted in silk and entirely decorated by hand using the batik tulis technique. Originating from the region of Juana or Rembang, this ceremonial pashmina was created between 1900 and 1930 by skilled artisans associated with the peranakan (Chinese Javanese) communities during the height of batik production in the colonial era.
The design features a central field of dense and harmonious floral patterns, framed by symmetrical borders with linear motifs and ceremonial banding at both ends. The overall aesthetic is defined by structured elegance, warm sepia and beige tones, and delicate calligraphic ornamentation typical of peranakan batik. The motifs evoke an orderly garden, symbolizing fertility, longevity, and spiritual balance—key concepts in both Javanese and Chinese culture.
The piece includes original hand-twisted silk fringes on both ends and is notable for its lightweight feel and natural luminosity. While it bears a small 2 cm age mark as a sign of authenticity, the overall condition is excellent, with no loose thread or damage.
