✧ Artistic Description:
This majestic ceremonial textile, titled “The Guardian of the Spirits”, is an outstanding example of the ances-tral textile artistry from Kambera, East Sumba, Indonesia. Created using the traditional warp ikat technique, this double-panel Hinggi Kombu consists of two precisely aligned and stitched panels—a feat of technical and visual mastery that ensures perfect symmetry of its complex motifs.
The composition displays stylized human figures, possibly ancestral guardians or mythical spirits, accompa-nied by symbolic animals and repetitive geometric patterns. These elements are deeply rooted in the Marapu cosmology, the indigenous belief system of the Sumbanese people, reflecting their spiritual and social struc-ture.
The naturally dyed palette—indigo, rust, ivory, and deep red—was extracted from local plants and applied through a labor-intensive tying and dyeing process before the threads were woven. Each element of the tex-tile is a testament to the artisans’ refined expertise and cultural heritage.

NOTE: Large-format double ikats with comparable ritual iconography are preserved in institutions such as the Museum Tekstil Jakarta, the Tropenmuseum (Amsterdam), and in private galleries specializing in South-east Asian tribal art.
✧ Provenance: ASücke Family Private Collection. This piece is part of a heritage collection of Southeast Asian textiles, preserved in family trunks since the early 20th century.
