BATIK TULIS WAYANG – “The Shadow of the Ramayana” Central Java or Bali, Indonesia – ca. 1930–1950
✧ Artistic Description:
This stunning textile, titled “The Shadow of the Ramayana”, is a superb example of ceremonial Batik Tulis inspired by the Wayang Kulit shadow puppet theatre—one of Indonesia’s greatest cultural legacies. Entirely handcrafted using the traditional wax-resist technique (batik tulis), this large-format cloth features a detailed narrative panel, where mythological figures from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epic tales unfold in a powerful symbolic composition.
The chromatic palette—deep black, burnt sienna, and warm beige tones—reflects traditional natural dyeing methods based on roots, barks, and minerals. The layout includes stylized human profiles with royal headpieces, sacred floral motifs, and classic geometric borders, all rendered with refined artistic sensibility and meticulous detail.
