Antique male ceremonial ikat on Selendang-style ikat fabric (Twuni Rai Savu), Sumba Island, Indonesia, Nusa Tenggara, vintage (1910-1930).
Description:
A completely hand-woven and hand-dyed shawl, the ikat motif bands treated solely with indigo, giving it an elegant appearance. An odd number of bands with main motifs (in this case, seven) and two asymmetrical sections (with four and three bands with main motifs, respectively) conform to local cultural principles, allowing the fabric to be used in important ceremonies and crucial rituals.
The serpentine motif, "keware," is a prerogative of the "wini Jèwu" matriline. A traditional hallmark of the "Lesser Flower" textile group is a wavy, serpentine motif. The second, smaller motif, the border, on the main band features a filler motif, equally important for identification. The motifs on the smaller bands are combined.
The material is handspun cotton (cotton thread). The textile has a luxurious and uniform feel thanks to its superior weave. It takes two years to spin enough dense cotton for this type of fabric, dyed with natural dyes: indigo (tilapia), morinda (noni), and turmeric, resulting in the blue-black, red, and yellow colors.
The condition is very good for its age thanks to careful conservation. It only has a small tear of almost 2 cm due to the ikat being hung on a wooden support. There are no loose threads, and the colors remain stunning. Please see the photos for a better assessment of the condition, as they are part of the descriptions.
