Antique Songket Batik Duplo Textile from Sumatra, Indonesia, late 20th century (1898-1929).
 
Exclusive and rare Songket Sarong, Shawl, in a beautiful brocade Batik textile, this piece was handwoven in silk in two pieces and joined in the middle.
It features an intricate pattern with supplementary gold metal threads inserted during the weaving process, forming a large purple fabric with shimmering gold and silver threads that beautifully complement each other.
The songket was made by the Bataks of northern Sumatra, inspired by the Silungkang songket textiles from western Sumatra. Silungkang is renowned for its songket, a fabric belonging to the brocade textile family of the Malay World.
The contrasting panel is known as 'tupal.' It bears the 'pucuk rebung' (bamboo shoots) motif, symbolizing strength, growth, rejuvenation, and good luck.
 
The tupal is meant to be worn at the center front or back when wrapped as a sarong. It is a luxury item traditionally used in ceremonial occasions, also as epaulettes or headbands and tanjak, a headdress. It can also be hung on the wall as a rare relic because these beautiful handcrafted works have not been made for a long time.
