This exceptional piece, titled “Parang of Royal Dreams”, is a delicate expression of classic Javanese batik, created using the traditional batik tulis technique on a fine, slightly rustic-textured cloth, likely a silk-cotton blend. Entirely hand-drawn with canting and wax-resist dyeing, it dates back to around 1940 and is closely associated with the artisanal workshops of Yogyakarta, one of the most prestigious centers of batik heritage in Java.
The central motif features the renowned Parang Klitik pattern, a refined and feminine variant of the classic Parang design. Composed of flowing diagonal “S” shapes, Parang Klitik symbolizes continuity, introspection, wisdom, and inner strength. In Javanese court culture, this pattern was traditionally reserved for noblewomen or women of high status during ritual or ceremonial occasions.
The color palette —earthy tones, cream, dark brown, and black— reflects the use of natural dyes characteristic of the pre-industrial era, while the texture of the cloth offers a slightly rustic, tactile quality that enhances its authenticity and historical charm.
