This imposing ceremonial textile, titled “The Guardian of the Horizon,” is a prime example of the ikat tradition from the island of Sumba. The design features mythological and geometric motifs that symbolize the connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds, characteristic elements of the Sumbanese worldview.The technique used, warp-weave ikat, requires meticulous planning and skill, as the threads are dyed before weaving to create precise patterns. The natural plant dyes used, such as indigo and morinda, provide a rich and lasting color palette over the years.
