BANGHANI BATIK GUJARAT OR SINDH, INDIA ca. 1950-1970
Artistic Description:
This dazzling piece, titled “Garden of Light”, is one of the finest examples of the Bandhani (or Bandhej) tradition—an ancient tie-dye resist technique practiced in the regions of Gujarat and Sindh, in western India. Made from a delicate silk and viscose blend of high quality, the textile presents a soft, luminous, and flowing texture that conveys both luxury and spiritual lightness.
Its visual composition is structured in decorative modules with strong chromatic and symbolic presence:
• A deep violet central field featuring stylized floral motifs in white and green.
• Multiple richly detailed bands with diamond, floral, and geometric forms, in vibrant tones of orange, purple, ivory, and black.
• A striking lower section with paisley (buta) motifs, the timeless symbol of fertility, wisdom, and eternity.
This piece masterfully combines tie-dye techniques (Bandhani) with batik detailing, especially visible in the outlines. The vivid and precise color application, the harmonious design, and its pristine condition all suggest it was intended for ceremonial use—possibly as a chadar, dupatta, or traditional shawl—but was never worn or used.
Condition:
Excellent condition, due to the visual richness of its design, the quality of the weave, and its rarity as an unused original piece and combination of traditional techniques. No signs of wear, with its vivid colors, defined contours, and unbroken weave. Ideal for framing or presenting in textile art exhibitions.
Provenance:
Part of the AStücke Family Private Collection. This piece was carefully preserved in family trunks brought to Europe from Asia between the 1950s and 1970s, as a testament to a cultural and spiritual legacy passed down through generations.
