BATIK TULIS – “The Flowers of Central Java” - Central Java, Indonesia – ca. 1900–1925
Artistic Description:
This remarkable piece, titled “The Flowers of Central Java”, is a fine example of classic batik tulis from the heart of Java, entirely handcrafted using the traditional wax-resist technique (tulis) on a base of very fine silk. It most likely originates from the Lasem region or its surroundings and was created between 1900 and 1925.
The design features a continuous and fluid botanical pattern, composed of stylized flowers and leaves framed by a refined geometric border. The dominant tones—beige, brown, and black—reveal the use of natural plant-based dyes, common in pre-industrial batik production.
The pashmina stands out for its light texture, precise execution, and natural sheen of the silk, all of which have been perfectly preserved. Likely used as a selendang (ceremonial shawl), this textile would have formed part of the ceremonial attire of married noblewomen, especially for temple visits or important social events.
