Title of the Piece: Batik Tulis – The Flight of the Spirit

Origin: Pekalongan (with possible Cirebon influence), North Java – Indonesia

Technique: Batik Tulis – completely handcrafted using the traditional canting wax-resist method, followed by successive baths in natural dyes. Unique piece.

Artistic Description: This magnificent Javanese batik masterpiece, titled “The Flight of the Spirit”, stands as one of the richest examples of ceremonial coastal batik from North Java. It was created using the refined batik tulis technique, entirely handcrafted with the traditional canting tool and natural vegetable-based dyes.
Originating from the region of Pekalongan, and clearly influenced by the ceremonial art of Cirebon, this piece offers a perfect fusion of coastal elegance and ancestral mythology.
The central field is covered in a lush network of flowering branches, dotted with stylized birds in flight, symbolizing spiritual freedom, harmony, and the connection between worlds. The dominant tones—oxblood red, indigo blue, black, and beige—reflect the use of natural dyes and a beautifully balanced chromatic treatment.
The lower section features a striking ceremonial band representing a Javanese mythological panel, where one can observe fantastical creatures resembling the Garuda, the sacred protective bird in Hindu-Buddhist tradition. These figures, surrounded by floral ornaments and symmetrical linework, evoke the narrative aesthetics of royal Cirebon batik, traditionally reserved for ritual celebrations, weddings, or high-ranking social events.
The lower edge of the piece is finished with a series of tumpal motifs (inverted triangles), symbolizing protection and spiritual balance, complemented by small floral rosettes that reinforce its visual harmony.
Thanks to its excellent state of preservation, its technical and symbolic richness, and the rarity of its double-sided execution (featuring decorative panels in both red and dark brown), this piece stands out as one of the most exceptional in the AStücke Family Private Collection. Its historical, aesthetic, and cultural value make it a true textile treasure, worthy of museum display or heritage collection.

Dimensions: 264 x 106 cm (103.9 x 41.7 inches)

Additional Notes: This batik is a masterpiece of Javanese spiritual symbolism. Its rarity, chromatic richness, and pristine condition make it one of the standout pieces of the “AStücke Family Private Collection”.
