CERIMONIAL PASHIMINA KIMKHWAB GOLD THREAD – (VARANASI OR GUJARAT) - INDIA Ca. 1900-1930.

Artistic description:
This exceptional piece, titled “The Splendor of Dreams”, is a fine example of traditional Indian textile art known as Kimkhwāb, woven in natural silk and brocaded with real metallic gold threads. It likely originated in the region of Varanasi or Gujarat and was created between 1900 and 1930 by highly skilled artisans associated with Muslim communities, during the golden age of brocade production in colonial India.
The design features a balanced and finely structured field of floral and geometric motifs, framed by symmetrical borders with linear patterns and ceremonial bands at both ends. The aesthetic is marked by refined structure, soft golden tones, and delicate caligraphic interpretations—hallmarks of Islamic-style brocade. The composition evokes a peaceful garden, symbolizing fertility, longevity, and spiritual harmony, values held dear in both Indian and Muslim cultures.
The pashmina includes original hand-twisted silk fringes at both ends and stands out for its lightness and natural luminosity. Its overall condition is excellent, with no unraveling threads or holes.
Additionally, due to stylistic similarities and historic trade connections between India and Indonesia, it is possible that such a piece may have been used ceremonially in Muslim communities of Indonesia, particularly in contexts such as weddings or religious festivities, reflecting a cross-cultural Indo-Indonesian influence.
