VINTAGE NATURAL COLOR SEKAR JAGAD PACITAN BATIK SARONG – 20TH CENTURY (1930-1940)
Indonesian Sarung Batik with Sekar Jagad Pacitan motifs with natural color – 20th Century (1930-1940)
This is a very rare, beautiful natural silk Sekar Jagad batik hand drawn and dyed with the quintessential pattern of silk batiks very soft to the touch, with firm and strong colors, it is the kind of silk batiks in a rare pattern, beautiful, imposing, a rare example of this kind that is distinguished by fine and strong lines with rich details.
The Sekar Jagad Batik motif meaning “a world of flowers” embodies diversity, it is one of the most typical motifs of Indonesia which comes from Java, it embodies diversity that contains beauty and harmony of nature, of human being with God incarnated in a beautiful natural design, this is the traditional motif of Sekar Jagad, the common fillings within each puzzle are well-known classical patterns such as kawung, parang, tree of life, etc. Flowers symbolize happiness, joy, beauty and purity. Lush and strong colors in original shades of green, yellow, violet (indigo) and plum also make up part of the sekarjagad and tumpal motifs in the center and body, dividing the fabric into sections that look like fields, each adorned with unique motifs. Natural dyes from Indigofera Tinctoris create soft blues, while hot wax reserve dyeing forms striking white patterns that blend seamlessly with the serene and strong tones.
It used to be worn as an everyday garment, such as a chest wrap, by Indonesian women, especially on the island of Java, before the more practical Western style of Indonesian blouse and kebaya became everyday clothing. A hand-drawn batik is produced through laborious work, starting with hand sketches, applying wax paint to each dot and stroke to resist coloring, and consequently successive coloring processes. Each piece can take from 1 to 4 months of work, depending on the complexity and sophistication of the motif.
The garment is in excellent condition, well preserved for its age, there are no flaws, no loose threads, stains or holes, the origin is from the private family collection, purchased in Indonesia in 1939.
