Artistic Description:
This majestic textile piece, titled “The Splendor of Palembang”, is an outstanding example of ceremonial textile art from southern Sumatra, woven continuously (not sewn) between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a ceremonial Songket Batik, handwoven on a traditional loom with a deep purple silk base and genuine gold metallic threads using the songket benang mas brocade technique.
The geometric and floral motifs reflect Islamic artistic influence, such as stylized Garuda wings rendered in abstract forms in line with Muslim aesthetic principles. The symmetrical vertical arrangement of the designs suggests ceremonial use, likely in weddings, religious festivities, or rituals of noble status. The border features the traditional tumpal pattern of inverted triangles that reinforce its spiritual meaning.
The reverse of the cloth shows a semi-translucent texture and reveals the technical sophistication of its weave, accompanied by a soft golden sheen with each fold. While two small restorations (approx. 3 cm each) are present, they are expertly done and barely visible. The overall condition is outstanding for its age.

Condition: In very good condition – Due to its age, the piece underwent a minor, almost imperceptible restoration (2-3 cm), noted in the photos as part of the descriptions.
Provenance: Private Collection of the AStücke Family. Acquired as part of a textile collection inherited by descendants with roots in Southeast Asia. Preserved in perfect condition in family trunks since the early 20th century.
