Artistic Description:
This piece, entitled “Garden of Memory”, is a representative example of floral upholstery fabrics produced in England during the 1940s and 1950s.
The design features bouquets of roses in shades of green, brown, and violet printed on a beige background — a motif highly appreciated in mid-century interior design. The fabric, likely cretonne or chintz cotton, was treated with a waxed finish, giving it a gentle sheen and a texture both delicate and firm to the touch.
These textiles were commonly used to upholster chairs, sofas, and cushions, and also served as material for draperies and decorative panels. The pattern appears to have been created using block printing or stencil techniques, echoing the styles promoted by British designers such as Dorothy Larcher and Lucienne Day, who led the floral renaissance in post-war textiles.
